What Is Lymphedema Treatment?

Lymphedema treatment is a specialized rehabilitation program designed to manage chronic swelling that occurs when the lymphatic system is unable to adequately drain fluid from the tissues. At Esencia Therapy & Wellness Center in Davie and Tamarac, Florida, our certified lymphedema therapists (CLTs) provide Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)—the internationally recognized gold standard for lymphedema management—combining manual lymph drainage, compression therapy, therapeutic exercise, meticulous skin care, and comprehensive patient education.

Lymphedema most commonly develops following cancer treatment, particularly after breast cancer surgery involving lymph node removal, but it can also occur as a primary condition or secondary to infection, trauma, or venous insufficiency. Left untreated, lymphedema progressively worsens and increases the risk of infections and tissue fibrosis. Our South Florida clinics provide early intervention and long-term management strategies that help patients throughout Broward County achieve significant swelling reduction and maintain their results over time.

At Esencia, we understand that lymphedema affects not just the body but also quality of life. Our compassionate therapists in Davie and Tamarac work closely with each patient to develop a sustainable self-management plan that includes proper compression garment fitting, home exercise programming, and skin care protocols. We also coordinate with oncologists, surgeons, and primary care physicians to ensure continuity of care for the best possible outcomes.

How Lymphedema Treatment Works

A two-phase approach that reduces swelling and empowers long-term self-management.

1

Comprehensive Lymphedema Assessment

Your certified therapist performs volumetric measurements, skin assessment, and reviews your medical history to determine the stage and severity of your lymphedema.

2

Manual Lymph Drainage

Gentle, rhythmic manual techniques redirect lymphatic fluid from congested areas toward functioning lymph pathways, reducing swelling and improving tissue health.

3

Compression & Exercise

Multi-layer compression bandaging is applied after drainage to maintain volume reduction. Decongestive exercises performed in compression further enhance lymphatic flow.

4

Self-Management Training

You are fitted for compression garments and taught self-drainage techniques, skin care routines, and a home exercise program for long-term lymphedema management.

Common Questions

Lymphedema Treatment FAQ

Lymphedema treatment is a specialized therapy program designed to manage chronic swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. At Esencia, our certified therapists use Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which includes manual lymph drainage, compression bandaging, therapeutic exercise, skin care, and patient education to reduce swelling, prevent infection, and improve quality of life.
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard treatment for lymphedema. It consists of two phases: an intensive phase where the therapist performs daily manual lymph drainage, applies multi-layer compression bandaging, and guides therapeutic exercises; and a maintenance phase where the patient manages their condition with self-drainage, compression garments, and a home exercise program.
The intensive phase of CDT typically lasts 2 to 4 weeks with daily or near-daily sessions. The duration depends on the severity of the lymphedema and how the body responds to treatment. After the intensive phase, patients transition to a self-management maintenance phase. Your therapist at Esencia will create a personalized treatment timeline based on your specific condition.
Yes, compression garments are an essential component of lymphedema management. During the intensive treatment phase, multi-layer bandaging is used. Once maximum reduction is achieved, you will be fitted for custom compression garments that maintain the reduction and prevent re-accumulation of fluid. Your therapist will help you select and properly fit your garments.
While lymphedema is generally a chronic condition without a definitive cure, it can be effectively managed with proper treatment. Complete Decongestive Therapy can significantly reduce swelling, improve function, and prevent complications. With consistent self-management — including compression, exercise, skin care, and periodic professional treatment — most patients achieve excellent long-term control of their symptoms.
