What Is Electrical Stimulation Therapy?

Electrical stimulation (E-Stim) therapy is a clinically proven modality that uses controlled electrical impulses to activate muscles, block pain signals, and promote tissue healing. At Esencia Therapy & Wellness Center in Davie and Tamarac, Florida, our physical therapists employ multiple forms of electrical stimulation—including TENS, NMES, and interferential current—to address a wide spectrum of musculoskeletal and neurological conditions with precision and effectiveness.

The therapeutic power of E-Stim lies in its versatility. Depending on the parameters selected by your therapist, electrical stimulation can reduce acute or chronic pain by interrupting nerve signals, re-educate muscles that have become weakened or inhibited after surgery or injury, decrease muscle spasms, improve local blood circulation, and even accelerate wound healing. This makes it an invaluable tool in the rehabilitation of patients across South Florida and Broward County.

At our Davie and Tamarac clinics, electrical stimulation is seamlessly integrated into comprehensive treatment plans that may also include manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, and other modalities. Our therapists carefully calibrate each session to your comfort level and therapeutic needs, ensuring that you receive the most effective treatment possible while feeling safe and informed throughout the process.

How Electrical Stimulation Works

A targeted, adjustable treatment delivering precise electrical therapy to the affected area.

1

Assessment & Selection

Your therapist evaluates your condition and selects the appropriate type of electrical stimulation—TENS, NMES, interferential, or other modality—based on your treatment goals.

2

Electrode Placement

Adhesive electrodes are carefully placed on the skin around the treatment area. Placement is precise to ensure optimal stimulation of the targeted muscles or nerves.

3

Calibrated Treatment

The device delivers controlled electrical impulses at settings tailored to your comfort and therapeutic needs. Intensity is gradually adjusted to achieve the desired response.

4

Integrated Recovery

E-Stim is often combined with other treatments in the same session for maximum benefit. Your therapist monitors your response and adjusts the program as you progress.

Common Questions

Electrical Stimulation FAQ

Electrical stimulation (E-Stim) therapy uses controlled electrical impulses delivered through electrodes placed on the skin to stimulate muscles and nerves. It is used in physical therapy to manage pain, reduce muscle spasms, strengthen weakened muscles, improve circulation, and promote tissue healing. Different types of E-Stim target different therapeutic goals.
The most common types include TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) for pain relief, NMES (Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation) for muscle strengthening and re-education, interferential current (IFC) for deep tissue pain relief, and Russian stimulation for muscle strengthening. Your therapist at Esencia will select the type best suited to your condition and goals.
Electrical stimulation should not be painful. Most patients describe the sensation as a tingling or buzzing feeling. The intensity is always adjusted to your comfort level. Some types of E-Stim may cause visible muscle contractions, which can feel unusual at first but should not be uncomfortable. Your therapist will monitor your response and adjust settings throughout treatment.
Electrical stimulation is not recommended for patients with cardiac pacemakers or defibrillators, those with active cancer in the treatment area, pregnant women (over the abdomen or lower back), people with deep vein thrombosis, or individuals with impaired sensation. Your therapist will thoroughly screen for contraindications before treatment.
A typical electrical stimulation session lasts 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the type of E-Stim being used and the condition being treated. It is often combined with other physical therapy modalities such as manual therapy or therapeutic exercises during a treatment session that may last 45 to 60 minutes total.
